Many of my friends often get surprised when I tell them about the exploits of our 6 – 12-year-old Sanshou students. Why, they ask in disbelief, do kids practise martial arts? Not many people know the benefits of martial arts and its contribution in building a wholesome child. The benefits are numerous and invaluable. Here, I have listed just half a dozen!
A Fit Body Means a Fit Mind
Martial arts offers many benefits, but when it comes to fitness, becoming a true martial artist means becoming a supremely fit person. Remember, an active body nurtures a sound mind!
They Learn Resilience
Your child will learn to take on life’s blows, real blows or disappointments! Resilience is born out of part learning and accepting that we all take hits. The bottom line is in learning how to deal with that hit, and getting back up after it.
Self-confidence and Self-respect Are Assets
Being able to advance and play with other kids generates a tremendous amount of confidence, and is a little reminder of humility; someone is always bigger and stronger. Your child will learn that confidence and respect for others comes from a deep sense of self-knowledge.
They Stay Focussed and Introspect
Even in this age of the Internet, there are many more benefits in stillness and silence. Behind the punches, kicks, and knees, a true martial artist learns to sit with himself and identify his weaknesses.
Improve Breathing
Indeed, nothing is more essential to our body than breathing. It can literally save your life. In martial arts, your kid will learn the essence of how to breathe and even relax under pressure.
Establish Mind-Body Connection
To listen to your body is to discover oneself and have a heightened sense of emotional awareness. A martial artists sees, feels, listens, both internally and externally, all the time!
The good thing is, any child can and will benefit from participation in martial arts. At SMA Centre, we are committed to realising the needs of your children. See more on our classes at www.sma.wpdevelopment.co.za.
