History

Tai Chi, or “t’ai chi ch’uan” (太极拳), translates to “supreme ultimate fist” and is a traditional Chinese martial art that emphasises slow, deliberate movements and internal energy cultivation. Originating in the Chen Village of Henan Province during the 17th century, Tai Chi was developed by Chen Wangting, a retired military officer. He integrated principles from various martial arts and Chinese philosophy to create a comprehensive system that balances self-defense techniques with health benefits.

Focus

Tai Chi focuses on harmonising the mind and body through controlled, flowing movements. Practitioners perform sequences known as “forms,” which consist of a series of postures executed in a continuous, circular manner. This practice enhances balance, flexibility, and mental clarity. The emphasis on internal energy, or “qi,” distinguishes Tai Chi from other martial arts, promoting overall well-being and stress reduction.

Advantages

The low-impact nature of Tai Chi makes it accessible to individuals of all ages, including older adults. Regular practice can improve cardiovascular health, enhance muscle strength, and increase flexibility. Additionally, Tai Chi serves as a form of moving meditation, aiding in stress management and mental relaxation. Its gentle movements and focus on mindfulness contribute to improved mental health and emotional balance.

At the Shuaimeng Liu Martial Arts Centre, we specialize in Chen-style Tai Chi, the oldest and most traditional form. Chen-style is characterized by its combination of slow, graceful movements and fast, explosive techniques, offering a comprehensive approach to martial arts training. Our curriculum includes instruction in the fundamental forms, such as the 18 Form and the 74 Form, providing students with a solid foundation in Tai Chi practice.
